General Grey Water
Information
Untreated grey (or
Gray) water can be used for sub surface irrigation if buried at
least 10cm below the surface of the soil or mulch in your garden.
Treated Grey water can be used for toilet flushing, clothes washing
and surface irrigation in your garden. Once you have determined how
much grey water you need to use and whether a grey water diversion
system is needed, you must then decide what system is best for your
needs.
Grey Water
Treatment Systems
Grey Water is the
water from the household that is considered “waste water”. It is the
water that comes from the washing machine, bathroom, shower, laundry
and hand basin. If this grey water is used properly by using a grey
water treatment system then this water can be recycled and re-used
around the home again. A grey water treatment system is filtered
through to a holding tank, is then percolated through a gravel bed
and filtered back into a tank and used for irrigation purposes.
Grey
water treatments systems are very effective for gardening and the
environmentally conscious.
Grey Water
Recycling
The best way to reuse
water for your garden is through grey water recycling. You can use
the grey water from your home (i.e. Water from your laundry,
kitchen, shower and hand basins) and have it diverted to your garden
bed or irrigation system if set up properly. Grey water recycling
can be very effective if set up properly and installing a proper
diversion system.
Grey water recycling is excellent for the
environment and very self satisfying.
Reuse Grey Water
around the home
To reuse grey water
around the home ensure that you are aware of local and state council
rules and that you are aware of any sewerage pipes that exist or may
need installing. To reuse grey water for your garden ensure that any
garden types that get this grey water are not susceptible to
disease. Trees and shrubs are generally pretty good with grey water.
Reuse grey water whenever you can be sure that you know the plants
that like it and dislike it.
Grey Water Diverter
You may want to
consider installing grey water diverter which will give you the
option of diverting your grey water to either your garden or a
holding tank. A grey water diverter is a good option if you want to
divert it to a specific place e.g. your garden or to use for
irrigation purposes. A
grey water diverter is available to purchase
separately when you buy a water tank. There are gravity diversion
devices and surge tank for grey water devices and grey water pump
diverters. These are generally used if the water has to be pumped
when the lawn area is away from the house.
Grey Water
Recycling Systems
There are many grey
water recycling systems available on the market now which can treat
the grey water from your home before you use the grey water on your
garden or around the home. You must consider that a high Ph level
in laundry detergents can be quite harmful for your garden so a
grey
water recycling system or treatment is usually recommended. Speak
to us regarding grey water recycling systems.
Pump Grey Water
You can pump grey
water from your washing machine, laundry, basin, and bath. To pump
grey water from your home plumbing you can install a gravity
diversion device or a grey water pump diverter. A pump for grey
water is generally used if the water has to be pumped when the lawn
area is away from the house or uphill from the house or the area is
too flat for a gravity system to work. A
grey water pump usually
has to have a backflow prevention device installed.
Tanks Grey Water –
Grey Water Tanks
Tanks used for grey
water or storage tanks for grey water are used to store the grey
water then use again for garden and irrigation purposes. Once they
are connected to your home plumbing to collect the grey water
(normally only the washing machine, laundry, taps & basin) it is
then stored in the tank until you are ready to use it. Normal water
tanks are recommended for this use and tanks for grey water are also
the same tanks for rainwater.
Tanks to hold Grey
water
Tanks to hold grey
water are the same tanks that hold rain water or normal water. The
best tanks for grey water are polyethylene tanks and these are
generally the same tanks that hold rainwater. Tanks that hold grey
water come in various sizes and shapes and are also available in
numerous colours. Tanks to hold grey water are specifically set up
to store and distribute grey water as it is stored.
Using Grey Water
Using untreated grey
(or Gray) water can be used for sub surface irrigation if buried at
least 10cm below the surface of the soil or mulch in your garden.
Using Grey Water that has been treated can be used for toilet
flushing, clothes washing and surface irrigation in your garden.
Once you have determined how much grey water you need to use and
whether a grey water diversion system is needed, you must then
decide what system is best for
using grey water around your home.

purposes.
