The planet is blessed with many natural resources that help sustain life and thus, making it truly unique. The many natural resources available to man include rain water, minerals, the soil and the atmosphere and by far, the rain water truly sustains life. History reveals that all through time civilizations have thrived in regions with plenty of water. However, with industrialization and the subsequent urbanization, global warming and a growth in the world population have emerged and this has made it difficult to distribute the usable water much.

Most of the rain water suffers surface run off and draining into the soil or the sea. This leaves the world population with limited water resources to tap on for all the domestic and industrial requirements. The rain water system can be studied in two categories – the natural rain water system and the man developed rain water system. In the case of the former, the natural rain water system, the rain water collects in water bodies such as ponds, rivers and lakes and the rest or overflow finds a path to the sea. Due to the salinity, much of the water is not usable and people are left with the collected water till the next monsoon.

In the case of the man made or man developed rain water system, the rain water can be sourced from surface run off areas such as roof tops and hollows on unpaved surfaces and directed towards a storage facility. From here the water is again routed via piping to the faucets or areas identified. The best examples of this include wells, tube wells, artificial tanks, artificial ponds and the latest rain water harvesting systems. The onus of retaining and reusing this precious natural renewable resource is on us and the faster the existent world population acknowledges the responsibility, the better for future generations. The use of the rain water harvesting systems can in fact be referred to as heirlooms by the present society to the future generations.

The existent rain water system is doubled in performance with these engineered units and it is now possible to source water for domestic and industrial use even in the dry summer months. With the rise in the demand for water, it has become imperative that we install and re use surface water during the monsoons. The technique used is simple and absolutely safe for family and structure. The rain water harvesting systems install a storage base - tank, barrel, cistern or butt, and the storage facility is fitted with pipes on either side.

While the pipes on one side route the water off roof tops and hollow surface areas into the tank, the pipes on the other side take the filtered water to the desired faucet. The in built filtration system keeps debris and sediments at bay and even if the water is not usable for drinking, it is absolutely safe for other domestic and industrial requirements like washing, cleaning etc. The natural rain water system has to be complimented with the man developed rain water system to meet the demands on the resource.
