installation of rainwater tanks in these vary in different areas.
Many local councils have specific requirements for installing the
tank, including size, colour and distance from neighbours'
boundaries. You may need to contact your local council to find out
about the planning and building requirements in your area before you
install rainwater tanks. Your council may even have the details all
outlined on their web site.
Rainwater Tank installation and connection in NSW
If

plumber and meet the requirements under the NSW Code of Practice for
Plumbing and Drainage. Ensure you use a licenced, professional and

Health requirements for rainwater tanks in NSW

NSW Department of Health does not recommend drinking rainwater where
a reticulated water supply is available. More information is
available from the NSW Health Rainwater tanks brochure click here:
http://enhealth.nphp.gov.au/ for all the information you need to
know on health and drinking rainwater tankwater.
Backflow prevention on rainwater tanks in NSW
Where a property is also supplied with a reticulated drinking water
supply, the NSW Code of Practice for Plumbing and Drainage requires
that all properties with a rainwater tank must have a backflow
prevention device on the property's boundary, regardless of whether
the water tank has a permanent connection to the water supply.

rainwater tank properly. Feel free to call us to discuss your set
up.

rainwater tank then you are responsible for the installation of a
backflow prevention devise at the property boundary which must be
fitted by a licenced and experienced plumber. In these cases,
you are not eligible for a rebate until the backflow prevention
device has been fitted and the plumber has supplied a permit, a
Certificate of Compliance and a Test Report to the local water
authority.
If
you are installing a rainwater tank underground with a cross
connection between the rainwater tank service and the water service
from a reticulated water main, you will be responsible for the
installation of an additional backflow prevention device which must
also be fitted by a licensed plumber. We can provide you with advice
regarding the type of backflow prevention required for your
underground rainwater tanks. If this is the case, you are not
eligible for a rebate until both backflow prevention devices have
been installed and the plumber has submitted a permit, Certificate
of Compliance and Backflow Prevention Maintenance and Test reports

RAINWATER TANKS REBATES IN ACT
The
ACT Government offers a range of incentive and rebate programs for
ACT residents including WaterSmart Homes and GardenSmart services
which include rainwater tanks rebates. Like other states and
territories the incentives are great and a nice reward for those
looking after our most precious resource.
The
GardenSmart service
The
GardenSmart service has been set up by the government for ACT
residents who install rainwater tanks that also has an internal
connection to inside the home for things like toilet flushing or
washing machine service. This is only available to properties
connected to ACTEW Corporation’s water supply network.
The
GardenSmart program for rainwater tanks installation in ACT
recognises that maximum benefits from installing a rainwater tank,
in terms of water saving and stormwater protection and when the tank
is used for internal purposes such as toilet flushing and clothes
washing as well as for garden watering. This provides a way for tank
water to replace mains water all year round - internally during
cooler months when the garden doesn't need much water, and outside
in the garden as well in warmer months - thereby increasing the
amount of rainwater that can be harvested and used.
The
ACT Government understands that initially there is a cost associated
with plumbing the tank water to use inside the home, and that is why
the rainwater tanks rebate program has been set up to specifically
rewards those residents who are prepared to make that extra
investment to maximise the water savings from the use of their
tanks.
