Water Storage Tanks:
Water in Australia is something that a lot of us take for granted.
In the city it’s as easy as turning on the tap and out comes the
water, but for our rural population the humble water storage tank is
the life blood of existence. Most Australians would be aware that we
live in the driest populated continent in the world, but until
recently rainwater storage tanks haven’t been a common site in the
urban back yard.
Water storage tanks are able to store substances that are used for
all sorts of purposes. They are highly utilized in the industrial
processes, such as water, sewage, petroleum and chemicals. Water
storage Tanks are used in a variety of industries, such as the
agricultural, oil/gas, water and waste water treatment. Water
storage tanks are used to store everything from molasses to chemical
waste. Check with manufacture before you use the storage tank for
anything other water as you may void your warranty. Water storage
tanks differ in size and capacity, ranging from small tanks holding
one hundred litres to water storage tanks greater than 50,000 litres.
Common manufactures of
water storage tanks include National Poly, Tankmasta, Supatank, RainHaven, Precision Poly and Poly Rainwater
Tanks. Storage tanks are mainly used to store water and are now
widely used in the urban markets, the inner city markets and also
outback and rural areas. Water storage tanks are now becoming a
standard inclusion on all new homes being built and many companies
and organizations are now buying water storage tanks for their
commercial uses too.
Water storage tanks can vary in shape and size, from the standard
round storage tank to the new slim line storage tanks, also
available are rectangle under deck water storage tanks and under
house bladder style storage tanks. All these styles of tank storage
systems can hold anywhere from a couple of hundred litres of water
to tens of thousands of litres.
Various materials are used for constructing water storage tanks
include
plastic,
polyethylene,
polypropylene,
fiberglass,
concrete, steel
and stainless steel.
Things to consider when thinking of installing a water storage tank:
1. Location of the water storage tank (indoors, outdoors, above
ground or underground)
2. Volume of water the water storage tank will need to hold for your
needs.
3. What the stored water will be used for, gardens, washing,
flushing toilets ect.
4. Temperature of area where water will be stored, concern for
freezing.
5. Whether you need pressurized supply for delivering the water.
6. How much roof area you can collect water from.
7. Wind and Earthquake design considerations allow water tanks to
survive seismic and high wind events.
