Site Preparation
Preparing your site for your Rain water tank installation in Sydney is as important as choosing the right water tank for your needs. Proper preparation and base construction is crucial if you want your water tank to last and for you to be able to claim on any warranty issues if your water tank should fail in any way. Most manufactures will supply you with their version of the appropriate way to install their water tank and the way the site should be prepared ready for the tank. The guidelines should be followed to ensure that you won’t have any problems with your rain water tank installation.

There is no substitute for good site preparation. Correct site preparation is essential to ensure a long and trouble-free life for your  Sydney water tank installation.

It is essential to have your water tank on a FLAT LEVEL COMPACTED BASE. The base of your water tank must be fully supported at all times.

CONCRETE SLAB water tank installation

Concrete Slab must be at least 25mpa and 100mm (4”) thick with F62 mesh halfway through the mix. It should be screeded flat and level with no high or low spots. The finished surface should have a trowelled finish.

CRUSHER DUST water tank installation

Crusher dust bases must be 300mm (12”) wider than diameter of the water tank and prepared as follows:
• Remove at least 100mm (4”) of natural earth, ensuring the base is flat and level.
• Refill with at least 75mm (3”) of crusher dust thoroughly mixed with dry cement powder (for a 4m (13’) base we suggest 2-3 bags of cement powder).
• Once spread, thoroughly compact the crusher dust with suitable compacting equipment, not by any other means.
• Thoroughly screed the surface and ensure the finished surface is perfectly FLAT AND LEVEL and free of stones, tree roots, etc. Do not water to set the cement powder, natural moisture will do this when your tank is in position.
• Note: Sand is not acceptable.

Planning for your water tank installation

You need to plan properly for water tank installation. If the single tank or the total of all tanks on your property is less than 10,000 litres, usually you do not need council approval. If your tank or tanks are larger than 10,000 litres you will need to get consent from your local council or your local Water Supply authority. Some councils have location, colour and/or noise control requirements for tanks. Please check with your local council before installing a rainwater tank. Most councils have Plumbing requirements for your water tank installation
If you are installing a water tank for indoors use you will need to sustain minimum water levels in your tank. A licensed plumber should install a top-up system from the drinking water supply or a 'rainwater tank control valve', which automatically switches to drinking water when the tank is empty. For proper water tank installation you may also need a flow restrictor to ensure the flow rate of water used to top-up the tank does not affect your water pressure or your neighbours' water pressure and you may also need a visible 'air gap' between the pipe from the mains supply and the tank.

Backflow prevention devices for water tank installation
Backflow can occur when rainwater from a tank mixes with the drinking water supply. To prevent this, a backflow prevention device needs to be installed at your property border when you install a water tank. Backflow prevention devices are not required for residential properties with a rainwater tank that is not connected to a top up from, the drinking water supply and collects roof water only. Tanks with a connection to the drinking water supply will require the installation of both containment and zone backflow prevention devices.

Water tank pumps
If your tank is not high enough for gravity to provide the required water pressure, you will need to install a rain water pump (click here for our range of pumps and accessories that are available on line now.

First flush devices
It's a good idea to install appropriate leaf screens and gutter guards to stop rubbish and insects entering the tank. Installing a first flush diverter is essential for reducing the amount of sediment and other materials entering the tank and polluting the water.
