where a reticulated water supply is available. More information is
available from the
NSW Health Rainwater Tank brochure
for all the information you need to know on health and drinking
rainwater tank water.
Backflow prevention on water tanks in NSW
Where a property is also supplied with a reticulated drinking water
supply, the NSW Code of Practice for Plumbing and Drainage requires
that all properties with a rainwater tank must have a backflow
prevention device on the property's boundary, regardless of whether
the tank has a permanent connection to the water supply. Again, we

installation and setup to ensure that you set up your rainwater tank
properly. Feel free to call us to discuss your set up.

If you are considering installation of a below ground or underground
water tank then you are responsible for the installation of a
backflow prevention devise at the property boundary which must be
fitted by a licenced and experienced plumber. In these cases, you
are not eligible for a rebate until the backflow prevention device
has been fitted and the plumber has supplied a permit, a Certificate
of Compliance and a Test Report to the local water authority.
If you are installing a rainwater tank underground with a cross
connection between the rainwater tank service and the water service
from a reticulated water main, you will be responsible for the
installation of an additional backflow prevention device which must
also be fitted by a licensed plumber. We can provide you with advice
regarding the type of backflow prevention required for your
underground water tank. If this is the case, you are not eligible
for a rebate until both backflow prevention devices have been
installed and the plumber has submitted a permit, Certificate of
Compliance and Backflow Prevention Maintenance and Test reports to
the local water utility.
WATER
TANK REBATES IN ACT

for ACT residents including WaterSmart Homes and GardenSmart
services which include rainwater tank rebates. Like other states and
territories the incentives are great and a nice reward for those
looking after our most precious resource.

The GardenSmart program for rainwater tank installation in ACT
recognises that maximum benefits from installing a rainwater tank,
in terms of water saving and stormwater protection and when the tank
is used for internal purposes such as toilet flushing and clothes
washing as well as for garden watering. This provides a way for tank
water to replace mains water all year round - internally during
cooler months when the garden doesn't need much water, and outside
in the garden as well in warmer months - thereby increasing the
amount of rainwater that can be harvested and used.
The ACT Government understands that initially there is a cost
associated with plumbing the tank water to use inside the home, and
that is why the rainwater tank rebate program has been set up to
specifically rewards those residents who are prepared to make that
extra investment to maximise the water savings from the use of their
tanks.
